So, I get the question frequently, "What should I do to keep my dog healthy?" Well, I have decided to create a checklist to help everyone get on the same page as it pertains to the care of their pup. The foundation of caring for your dog's health relies on your daily observations of his/her behavior, eating habits, bathroom habits, etc.. On the veterinary side, we are the dog's health advocate. It is our responsibility to elaborate on any observations out of the normal that you may have concerning your pet. So, the logical place to start the checklist is with a checkup.
1. Checkups are vital in diagnosing subtle problems that occur in dogs, which may go unnoticed at home.
2. Vaccinations are recommended to protect your dogs against infectious diseases that your dog may contact from the environment or other animals.
3. Heatworm prevention is vital here in Roswell Georgia. We check our patients annually to ensure that our dog patients have not break-through in protection. This disease can prove deadly in advanced stages.
4. Fleas and ticks are a common problem plaguing the Atlanta area and protection is vital to prevent flea allergies. Also, fleas and ticks transmit diseases through bites, so prevention is the best tool we have against disease transmission.
5. Dental Disease is so common in our companions. Reports show that 80% of dogs that are age 3 show evidence of dental disease. If left untreated, this disease may cause kidney, liver, and heart disease. We perform an oral assessment at every exam to ensure that your pet owners are able to provide superior care for their pets.
6. Microchipping is extremely important for your dog. In many cases, this allows for safe return of many pets that get out of the house and become lost. We are able to implant a microchip at any time during an exam visit.
7. Obesity is a common problem in our canine companions. Overweight dogs can have similar health problems that plague humans. Overweight dogs are also more prone to orthopedic disease, as they place more strain on their joints due to the extra weight they are carrying.
