Fleas are not our friends, they actually can cause a slew of issues for both our fur kids, ourselves and our family. Below are some facts about fleas and our recommendations. Remember, fleas, tick and mosquitoes (which transmit heartworms) are a year round problem here in Georgia. Prevention is key.

Flea Facts

  • In temperate climates, 90-95% of fleas emerge within 21-35 days.
  • In subtropical climates, 96-99% of fleas emerge within 14-28 days.
  • Adults begin feeding immediately when on the host.
  • Blood excreted by adult fleas dries into reddish-black pellets in the hair coat (flea dirt or frass).
  • Egg production begins within 20-24 hours of females taking their first blood meal.
  • Female fleas can produce 40-50 eggs per day. So if you do your math fleas can lay 1,500 eggs a month!
  • Under normal conditions, most adult fleas generally survive 2-3 months.
  • Fleas carry a bacteria called Bartonella that can be spread to cats and dogs…and also transmissible to humans!

Our recommendations:

  • All year round protection. We recommend Nexgard or Frontline Gold.
  • In the case where there is an infestation, we recommend starting monthly preventative immediately.
  • Dispense 3 Capstars to be given in 2 week intervals to break the cycle.
  • The environment must be treated – Flea Busters is a great recommendation.
  • Every pet in the household must be on flea prevention. Yes, even your indoor only cat. There is no such thing really since humans tend to bring uninvited guests, like fleas and parasite into our homes through our shoes, house plants, etc.
  • If they are on a preventative, and fleas are still and issue, the pet parent should contact the manufacturer to help with treatment cost and to report product failure.
